LAKEVILLE, Conn. – At a regional SCCA race held here Aug. 6, Team Flatout took a weekend off from driving in order to focus on customer support. Painful though it is to visit our favorite track without racing, we think you’ll agree the results were worthwhile:

ITS hot shoe Ben Phillips, whose Mazda RX-7 has been beset by baffling engine gremlins all season, took his first-ever class victory. Phillips had suffered the tortures of the damned all year, showing up for races only to have a mysterious engine ailment return at high revs. Many parts had been thrown at the problem by others, but we finally got it diagnosed and repaired – and we congratulate Ben on nailing a win his first time out with full power!

Brian Reilly, who had us build him a 1.6-liter Spec Miata, entered his first race with it, and blew minds by qualifying on the outside pole with a 1:04.2 (after running 1:03s in practice!). In the race, Reilly seized the lead from SM Superman Ken Payson and led several laps until a freak spinout relegated him to fourth.
